Nanny? No no!
February 7, 2008Just when I decided to be brave and go nanny hunting online (“indian nanny nj”), google taunted me with this. Big Byte will think I purposely dug this up as yet another excuse to avoid getting a nanny. And now that I’ve read it, graphic images will infest my mind with putrid paranoia. Somebody shoot me. Now.
Edited: I strongly opposed Big Byte whenever he suggested a nanny cam. It’s invasion of privacy and moreover, leaving someone with your child requires that you forge a healthy relationship with the caregiver, and healthy relationships are based on trust. Bah! Bring on the latest in spycam technology. I want real-time feeds from EVERY room.
sorry to be the voice of doom but i work from home for very similar reasons. the first nanny i got burnt my son. another was around when he fell. his mouth was full of blood.. and she didnt realise it … till i came home and found it. a third used to yank his arm and now its easily dislocated and we have to be extra careful. the current one insists on taking her tea into the nursery (while i work in my room)… and yesterday my 11 mth old put her hand into it and screeched. obv i found out! sigh. this is the story of my life. i notice you’re struggling with the working thing.. all the best. tell me if you find a solution. i need a good one!
Scary stuff Mad Momma. Sucks what happened to The Brat. My struggles are far from over and looks like I’ll be doing a full 180 on this one. I’ve got to admit, the way you’ve raised your kids has been little more than a slight inspiration
gee thanks. *blush*
It’s hard to trust somebody – especially a stranger – to look after your child.
This is one of the risks of a nanny. Of course there are several qualified nannies around, several of them may have extensive childcare experience and are from ‘nanny agencies’ and all, but still, the risk that she might do something like this while your back is turned is possible.
This is why I feel more reassured with creches (the child is never left alone with anybody) but there are other minuses there (being surrounded by bugs and therefore, picking up more infections).
It’s not easy, but one piece of advice I’d give is to never rush or make a decision under pressure. If you’ve got a doubt or a gut feeling (‘this place or this childminder doesn’t seem quite right’) probe that a bit further.
All I can say is good luck.
NP: Thanks! I tend to agree regarding creches. Just worried about back-up childcare if Nibbles falls sick – wait, just plain worried if Nibbles falls sick. Things have finally worked out. Post to follow.
